Mylk
Mylk has become a go-to meeting place in the heart of Town providing refreshments in front of this stunning historic building.
Tyrrell Dowinton Architects were appointed by McAulay Developments to review the Market Buildings and explore opportunities to further enhance these historic iconic buildings
Market Terrace and Market Square provides a large al fresco public open space in the heart
of Town. Fresh Food Fridays and other one-off events have proven extremely successful in the past and therefore we were asked to design a more permanent structure that could provide refreshments on a regular basis.
In close dialogue with the Planning Department, we were able to design a kiosk that wraps around the northwest corner of the Flower Market and create a facility that serves both the Market Terrace and Market Square.
The structure was carefully designed to work with the contours of the existing Flower Market whilst being sensitive to the historic architecture of these important buildings. The decorative facia was uniquely designed for this building and reflects the scrolls and volutes found on the ironwork of Les Arcades balcony.
The glazed roof and metal framework also ensures that the structure has a light connection to the terrace and existing building and flows around the Terrace.
The kiosk has been extremely well received by the general public especially during the summer months and has become a popular location to meet. This facility also benefits from localised heating and shelter which ensures it can also be used in the winter months.
This building was the first phase in a series of alterations to the Market Buildings with a view to revitalising the existing Protected Buildings and neighbouring public spaces.
